Child Safety and Protection Month

November is National Child Safety and Protection month in which awareness is raised for the innocent lives lost to often preventable and unintentional injuries. According to the CDC, an average of 12,175 children die each year from accidents like these. It is important to know that safety starts at home with simple measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of these tragedies.

Some safety tips to remember:

96F5AE35-DA8A-493A-881A-9E300ED0BFE5

Keep cleaning supplies, medicines, garden chemicals and toxic substances up high and out of reach
Learn to install and buckle up your child’s car seat properly and adjust straps so that they are placed over their chest
Teach children to not play near or on the street and always ask an adult for help if a toy goes past the driveway
Be aware of bodies of water and enforce safety rules such as no running or playing near the water

Always check on kids, whether they are in their room or crib. It only takes seconds for something to go wrong

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

WM_Breast-Cancer_10.19

October is the month we raise awareness about the importance of finding cancer in its early stages. Since breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer, so much so that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer at some point, it is important to spread the benefits of yearly testing. The good news is that if found early enough, women can win this fight. Simply by getting a yearly mammogram as suggested by the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the survival rate for women is close to 100%! Take the initiative and know there is hope, you aren’t in it alone.

Time to D.I.Y.

WM_DIY_10.19

As we watch the leaves change colors, feel the nights get a bit colder and make our home smell like cinnamon and pumpkin, take time to do some D.I.Y around your home. Small things can make a big difference in getting your home ready to host your family for the holidays, or a movie night in cuddled up on the couch.

Something as easy as collecting pine cones and pine needles to fill an old vase for an easy centerpiece. Empty out that Mason jar and top it off with Reese’s for the perfect candy display that everyone will love. Dust off your coffee tray and lay a bed of fall leaves as the base for your scented candles. Take an old white sheet and tie-dye it black to make a spooky table runner that looks like a spider web. And of course, most of all, enjoy these moments with your loved ones.

Energy Saving Tips

WM_Energy-Saving_10.19

Knowing how to save energy doesn’t just mean turning off all the lights and having the thermostat set to an ideal temperature; but learning how some small changes could also save you big money this winter season.

Here are some helpful tips on staying warm without burning a hole in your pocket:

  1. Use weather stripping, quilted curtains and draft stoppers on your doors to insulate your home to help keep the heat in.
  2. Set thermostat as low as comfortably possible, try using layered clothes and blankets as oppose to raising the thermostat temperature
  3. Unplug all appliances and electronics that are easy to plug in and use when needed such as phone chargers, coffee makers, hair tools and gaming systems.
  4. Replace the heater’s filter as often as recommended by the manufacturer
  5. Have air vents professionally cleaned to ensure that the maximum air flow is entering the home

Prepare for the Rainy Season

WM-Rain_9.30.19

Rain, rain, go away. If only that worked!

As the rainy season approaches we would like to remind everyone about some precautionary things you can do to make sure your home is ready.

  1. Check your roof for any lifted or damaged shingles where water could seep through.
  2. Clean out gutters by removing all debris that is blocking the draining of water.
  3. Check for any dead overhanging branches, which may catch fire or fall onto the house and cause damage.
  4. Do an interior inspection of walls and look for signs of existing water damage.
  5. Keep sandbags ready to go in case you have to reroute the flow of water away from your home.

Earthquake Preparedness

WM-earthquake_9.16.19

Is your home ready for the next big one?

Although earthquakes are unpredictable and years can go by without feeling one, being ready at all times is a must! Everyone knows to take cover and wait it out, but what do you do once the shaking has stopped, will you be ready? A few very important reminders:

  1. Try to maintain close to a full tank of gas in your car at all times (or in portable containers) as gas stations will not operate after a big earthquake.
  2. Share your phone location with family and/or friends so that in the midst of havoc, you can still find each other.
  3. Along with your first aid kit and back up food supply keep a portable charger that can keep your phone alive a little bit longer to call for help.
  4. Check under your sinks for cracks or leakages to make sure you won’t be leaving the house and coming back to a flooded home.
  5. Be ready for aftershocks! Although checking for damages is important, know that aftershocks are more than certain so be prepared to exit or take cover.
